About 45% of people make resolutions each New Year. These can range from losing weight, to getting organized, to quitting smoking. In most cases people are willing to spend money — and a lot of it — to make their resolution a reality. In fact, it’s estimated that people spend $5.6 billion each year to support their resolutions. Not surprisingly, a big part of that is in the health and diet industry which has annual U.S. revenue of $20 billion.
Currently some 108 million Americans are on a diet — and 85% of weight-loss products and services are purchased by women. Sports and fitness are a big part of annual resolutions, and that’s also a big spending category — projected to reach $23 billion in 2016.
